About the project

Built to encourage a closer look at the sky

PictureCloud combines a private photo-comparison tool with a practical field guide. It is an independent educational project operated by Marius Potfer.

The idea

Cloud identification becomes more useful when a photograph starts a process of observation rather than ending it. PictureCloud offers a ranked visual comparison, then points back to texture, structure, apparent level, weather context, and similar-looking clouds.

The website works without an account. The Android app adds a camera-oriented workflow, a compact offline guide, and a small observation history stored on the device.

Privacy is part of the product

Photographs

Selected photographs are processed locally by the app or browser and are not uploaded to PictureCloud for recognition.

Accounts

PictureCloud does not currently provide user accounts, profiles, public posts, or cloud photo storage.

Analytics

Website analytics requires an explicit opt-in. App analytics is separately controlled in the app settings.

Control

App observations can be deleted individually or together. Website analytics choices can be reopened from every footer.

What PictureCloud is not

PictureCloud is not a weather forecast, warning service, aviation aid, or authoritative cloud-identification system. A single photograph cannot provide reliable height, motion, temperature, pressure, or the full surrounding weather pattern. Use an official meteorological service for forecasts and safety decisions.

Transparency

The project publishes the classifier’s measured baseline, input contract, vocabulary, and known limitations instead of presenting a model score as certainty. Read the model card for technical detail and the privacy policy for data handling.
